Shriners Hospitals for Children Open: Latest odds, picks
We certainly did not see the Sergio Garcia revival coming last week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Garcia had not won on the PGA Tour since his breakthrough 2017 Masters triumph and seemed to have rested on his laurels ever since. However, Garcia has found new inspiration through family loss during the pandemic, and his game looks to be rounding into form one month before a return to Augusta National.
As for our picks, sleeper Kristoffer Ventura led the way with an impressive T-6 finish, and defending champion Sebastian Munoz sneaked into the top 25 at T-23 for us.
We are now beginning to see more stars compete as the busy fall season continues with a two-week stint in Las Vegas.
According to U.K. oddsmaker William Hill, the heavy favorite this week in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin will be U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau, at 7-1. Next, Webb Simpson, who like DeChambeau will be making his first start since Winged Foot three weeks ago, was listed at 11-1. Patrick Cantlay, the 2017 Shriners winner, was a 16-1 selection. Rounding out the favorites, Tony Finau was rated at 20-1, followed by PGA champion Collin Morikawa and Hideki Matsuyama at 22-1.
For our favorite, Cantlay, at 16-1, presents the most value. Though he has not enjoyed much success since the season restart, his track record at TPC Summerlin can't be ignored. In addition to his 2017 victory, Cantlay finished runner-up in each of the past two years, including a playoff loss to Kevin Na in 2019. Cantlay is an auto “top-10 finish” bet.
For a midrange pick, we are going to go with Matthew Wolff at 28-1. It will be his first start since his U.S. Open heartbreak, when he lost the 54-hole lead and finished runner-up to DeChambeau, but he has the tools to bounce back on a course that will be much more forgiving than Winged Foot. Wolff has finished in T-16 or better in three of his past four starts and will look to utilize his advantage in strokes gained tee-to-green, where he ranks second this year.
For a sleeper, we’re going with Joaquin Niemann at 60-1. The 21-year-old Chilean tied for 10th in the 2018 Shriners. Niemann, the 2019 Greenbrier champion, ranks sixth in strokes gained putting this year. He has shown flashes of brilliance recently at the BMW Championship (T-3) and U.S. Open (T-23), so would not be shocked to see him high up on the leaderboard this week.
