Shriners Hospitals for Children Open: Long, longer, longest
Bryson DeChambeau, Matthew Wolff and Cameron Champ, three of the longest drivers in a new generation of power players on the PGA Tour, will match towering tee shots this week at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
The trio were announced Monday as one of the featured pairings for the tournament, which begins Thursday at TPC Summerlin.
In last year’s PGA Tour driving distance statistics, DeChambeau ranked No. 1 at 322.1 yards on measured drives, and Champ was a close second at 322.0, with Wolff ninth at 311.6. Early in the 2020-21 season, the three once again are among the leaders.
DeChambeau and Wolff, who played in the final two-ball at the U.S. Open three weeks ago at Winged Foot, routinely pounded 350-yard-plus drives, seemingly with little concern about whether their shots landed in the fairway or not. DeChambeau’s eventual six-stroke victory over Wolff wowed observers and sent traditionalists scrambling for ways to protect the game’s customary emphasis on accuracy.
DeChambeau, who is No. 6 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and No. 18 Wolff will be making their first appearances since the Open, as will Champ, who missed the cut at Winged Foot. Ten of the world's top 30 players were entered.
Tee times were expected to be released by Tuesday afternoon.
