2020 Masters: Sergio Garcia WDs after positive COVID-19 test
Former Masters champion Sergio Garcia has withdrawn from this week’s 84th Masters, citing a positive COVID-19 test over the weekend.
Garcia, 40, who won the 2017 Masters, disclosed Monday on Twitter that he tested positive on Saturday after driving from the Houston Open, where he had missed the cut a day earlier, to his home in Austin, Texas.
Garcia becomes the second COVID-19 casualty of this year’s Masters, joining Chile’s Joaquin Niemann as players being forced to isolate themselves with the virus.
Garcia had played in 84 consecutive major championships, spanning the past 21 seasons. He had not missed one of golf’s biggest events since the 1999 U.S. Open.
Garcia won the Sanderson Farms Championship on Oct. 4 for his 11th PGA Tour victory and his first since donning the green jacket on April 9, 2017. He is ranked No. 40 in the world.
His absence at Augusta National Golf Club this week will trim the Masters field to 94 players.
