2020 Masters: Dustin Johnson, Dylan Frittelli charge into share of lead
Dustin Johnson and Dylan Frittelli surged into a share of the lead at the 84th Masters, completing 7-under 65s early Friday as the suspended first round wrapped up at Augusta National Golf Club.
Frittelli began the day at 4 under through nine holes, and Johnson started at 3 under through nine after darkness suspended the weather-delayed first round. England’s Paul Casey posted an early target score Thursday before darkness suspended play. The first round had been delayed 2 hours and 45 minutes because of thunderstorms Thursday morning (scores).
Johnson, 36, a 23-time winner on the PGA Tour, is seeking his second major championship after having won the 2016 U.S. Open. He has finished among the top 10 in four consecutive Masters, including a co-runner-up to Tiger Woods last year.
“I feel like I’m on a good roll here,” Johnson said.
Frittelli, 30, of South Africa, has won once on the PGA Tour and twice on the European Tour. He played college golf at Texas, where he was a senior on the Longhorns’ 2012 NCAA Championship team that included Jordan Spieth.
Frittelli is playing in his second Masters. He missed the cut in his debut, in 2018.
American Justin Thomas and South Korean Sungjae Im also completed their first rounds Friday morning, signing for 6-under 66s to share fourth place.
The second round was scheduled to begin later Friday morning.
