Fans will be barred again from U.S. Women’s Open, report says
Banned: Spectators at this year’s U.S. Women’s Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco, according to a report by Ron Kroichick in the San Francisco Chronicle. Citing sources close to the decision, Kroichick, an occasional Morning Read contributor, says state and local public-health officials, the USGA and LPGA made the decision because of concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic. An unspecified number of Olympic Club members will be allowed to attend. The tournament is scheduled for June 3-6. The 2020 USWO, which was postponed from June until December because of the virus, was played without spectators at Champions Golf Club in Houston. Next week’s ANA Inspiration, the LPGA’s first major championship of the season, also will be played in California and without spectators. Among the 30.2 million cases of COVID-19 cases in the U.S., which have resulted in 548,000 deaths, California has led the nation in both categories: 3.66 million infections, of which nearly 59,000 have died.
