Former PGA Tour winner Jerry McGee dies

McGee, 77, who won 4 times in 1970s and played in 1977 Ryder Cup, was LPGA champion Annika Sorenstam’s father-in-law

Died: Jerry McGee, a four-time winner on the PGA Tour in the 1970s, on March 31 in Orlando, just weeks after having moved to Florida to be closer to family, according to a PGATour.com report. He was 77. No cause of death was cited, but McGee had been hospitalized in the previous week for an undisclosed illness. McGee’s son, Mike, is married to Annika Sorenstam, the 72-time LPGA champion. McGee, a native of New Lexington, Ohio, turned pro in 1966 after having played college golf at Ohio State. From 1967 to 1983, McGee made 322 cuts in 404 starts on the PGA Tour. He peaked in the late 1970s, winning four times from 1975 to 1979. McGee played on the Americans’ victorious 1977 Ryder Cup team. He also made 318 starts on the Champions Tour. “I was so lucky,” McGee told the Tribune Chronicle of Warren, Ohio, in a 2014 interview. “I’ve gone to places, met people, that I would never had the opportunity to without the game of golf.”
