European Tour adds 3rd event in Canary Islands

Tenerife Championship on May 6-9 replaces canceled French Open and will be 2nd consecutive event to be played on island of Tenerife

Added: By the European Tour to its 2021 schedule, a third event in the Canary Islands, to replace the French Open, which was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns. The Tenerife Championship will be played May 6-9, ending a three-week stretch in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwest Africa in the North Atlantic. The event will follow the April 29-May 2 Tenerife Open, both of which will be played at Golf Costa Adeje in Santa Cruz on the island of Tenerife. The Gran Canaria Lopesan Open on April 22-25 will open the tour’s three-week stay in the Canary Islands. Each event will feature a €1.5 million (about $1.8 million) purse. “It was important for us to replace the postponed Open de France to provide playing opportunities for our members, while staging a second event in Tenerife, and playing a third consecutive week in the Canary Islands, also helps to reduce travel for our players, caddies and staff,” European Tour CEO Keith Pelley said. The three-week Canary Islands Swing precedes the European Tour’s return to its home base with the Betfred British Masters on May 12-15 at The Belfry in England.
