Mystery surrounding Matthew Wolff deepens

22-year-old American, who finished 2nd in his U.S. Open debut last year, withdraws from PGA Championship without explanation

Withdrew: Matthew Wolff, from next week’s 103rd PGA Championship, the PGA of America announced Wednesday, without elaboration. Wolff, 22, a Californian with an unorthodox swing who won an NCAA title at Oklahoma State, has endured a bizarre golf season, with a disqualification and a withdrawal in two of his past three starts. In his most recent appearance, he was DQ’d after a second-round 79 ensured that he would miss the cut when he signed for a lower score than he actually made at the par-4 17th hole. At the WGC Workday, he withdrew after a first-round 83. In September, Wolff held the 54-hole lead in his debut at the U.S. Open before a final-round 75 left him six strokes behind winner Bryson DeChambeau. Three weeks later, Wolff finished runner-up in Las Vegas. In his ensuing nine stroke-play starts, he posted no result better than a T-36 at the Phoenix Open. Wolff won the 2019 3M Open, his lone victory on the PGA Tour to date, in only his third start as a professional. He was replaced in the PGA Championship field by American Tom Hoge.
