THE REVIEW

Starter: The rolling hills of Westchester County, large rocks and trees make Pound Ridge quite a visual experience. Course architect Pete Dye used the natural terrain to incorporate his traditional point-to-point design philosophy and that alone is an interesting experience. Like most of Dye's courses, positioning off the tee is crucial. With generous fairways, the proper side of the fairway is necessary in order to attack the hole location. 

Play because …: For October, the course was in unbelievable shape. Few, if any, public courses are maintained at this level. Every shot is a challenge as the course includes a number of blind tee shots and forced carries. 

Takeaway: The course conditions, design and views are enough to make this course a fun experience.

Best par 3: 11th hole, 206 yards. A picturesque hole with the teeing grounds set back in individual stone chambers, making them look almost like an underground tomb. With an angular green, the hole necessitates an aerial attack to any hole location from the green's middle to the back. Any shots left or short provide a fair opportunity to get up and down, but right is likely a bogey or worse.
Best par 4: 12th hole, 412 yards. This hole plays slightly uphill, but provides a lot of room to the right. The green is well protected by mounds that are a mainstay of this Dye design, but they are actually a preferred bailout area because they will kick the ball toward the green.     
Best par 5: 9th hole, 573 yards. An oddly shaped dogleg left hole with a generous fairway. As with many of the holes at Pound Ridge, it plays uphill. Unlike many new courses, the green is elevated, looking more like an Alistair MacKenzie or Donald Ross design. The elevated green also makes for a challenging and enjoyable third shot..
