The Cliffs is one of those places that is somewhat hard to describe.

While The Cliffs is viewed as a single entity, it’s actually a collection of seven private golf communities that are dotted along nearly 70 miles and three distinct regions in western North and South Carolina. And membership at any Cliffs community gains access to the amenities of the other six.

In 1991, the first homesite was sold at The Cliffs at Glassy, located on a mountaintop in Landrum, S.C. Real estate developer Jim Anthony’s vision of marrying scenic mountain and lake communities with golf courses designed by top course architects was underway. In 1993, the community’s Tom Jackson-designed course became the first mountaintop course in South Carolina.

At The Cliffs’ southernmost point are three communities — Keowee Vineyards, Keowee Falls and Keowee Springs — along the shores of the manmade reservoir, Lake Keowee. The South Carolina communities are located 50 miles west of Greenville and 20 miles north of Clemson.

Tom Fazio designed Keowee Vineyards (1999) and Keowee Springs (2008), and Jack Nicklaus designed Keowee Falls (2007). In 2009, Keowee Springs was selected as one of the 10 best private courses in America byGolf Magazine.

The Cliffs’ mountain region, which runs along the Blue Ridge Mountains, is located north of Greenville, S.C., and includes the original Glassy, along with the Valley and Mountain Park communities. Ben Wright designed the parkland-style Valley course that opened in 1995. Gary Player conjured up the rugged Mountain Park course, which opened in 2013 and has 14 of its 18 holes playing along and over the North Saluda River.

There is more to The Cliffs franchise than golf and stunning vistas — such as the 75-mile clear-day views from the Glassy mountaintops. The seven-for-one membership opens up a vast array of sporting and lifestyle amenities at all of the communities — casual and fine dining, biking, hiking, horseback riding, tennis, yoga, water sports and wellness centers.

In 2019, real estate developer and operator South Street Partners acquired The Cliffs, adding it to a portfolio that includes developer Kiawah Partners and the private Kiawah Island Club in South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Walnut Cove is the lone Cliffs community in North Carolina, located in Arden, 15 miles south of the diverse arts, beer and culinary city of Asheville. Jack Nicklaus designed and opened the first of his two Cliffs courses here in 2005.

From a golfer’s perspective, The Cliffs offers a diverse menu of playing options, elevations, design styles, grasses and difficulty.
