ST. PAUL — The No. 3 Warroad Warriors (26-3-1) defeated the No. 2 Orono Spartans (20-6-3) 2-1 in three overtimes in the 2025 Minnesota (MSHSL) high school girls hockey Class 1A semifinal on Friday at Xcel Energy Center.

As the Warriors and the Spartans played to overtime after overtime, Warroad head coach Dave Marvin had a simple strategy.

"Hang in there long enough until someone makes a mistake," he said. "That was our gameplan toward the overtimes."

Luckily for Marvin and Warriors, goalie Payton Rolli didn't make a mistake despite many opportunities to do so. She saved 61 shots, keeping Warroad in the game long enough for freshman forward Lindsay Lorenson to place the puck in the top of the Orono net in the third overtime.

"We wouldn’t be here without our goaltender playing so dang well," Marvin said. "It’s actually not even a surprise to us that [Rolli] did that today. We wished it wouldn’t have taken that kind of effort, but she’s been so good for two years, and it’s super gratifying that she held us in there long enough where we could finally make a play."

Orono took a 1-0 lead in the first period when Zoe Lopez scored on a power play. The Warriors tied the game in the second period with a goal from Kaiya Sandy on a power play.

Orono built a steady advantage in shots on goal as Rolli continued to keep the game tied. The Spartans finished with a 62 to 40 shots-on-goal advantage.

"When you put 60-plus shots on net, and you only get one goal, you just have to give credit where credit is due," Orono coach Paul Antonenko said.

For Warroad, it's another magical performance in the Xcel Energy Center. The Warriors can win their fourth straight Class 1A title with a win against either Dodge County or Academy of Holy Angels on Saturday.

"We’ve put ourselves in a position to play for something special," Marvin said. "There is nothing to save it for."
