Bob Costas has made headlines this week after fans criticized some of his calls during the MLB playoffs, but on Tuesday, he made some new headlines outside of the broadcast booth.

Costas was out to dinner in Syracuse, N.Y., recently when a friend of his started choking. Thinking fast, Costas stepped in and performed the Heimlich maneuver.

Costas doesn’t think he was that much a hero, though.

“Luckily enough it worked out,” Costas said on The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman. ”I don’t know if I saved his life, but I saved him considerable discomfort, that’s for sure.”

One of Costas’s longtime representative reiterated this sentiment.

“Bob doesn’t think this was that big of a deal,” the representative told Page Six. “He really feels he did what just about anyone else would do in a similar situation.”

Costas will continue announcing the Dodgers–Diamondbacks NLDS on Wednesday.
