Rockies hand All-Star Tulowitzki six-year, $120 million extension

The Rockies and All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki have agreed on a six-year contract extension worth about $120 million, SI.com has confirmed.

The Rockies also agreed to pick up Tulowitzki's $15 million option for 2014 on top of the three years he already was guaranteed, making it a 10-year contract. With the extension, Tulowitzki's total contract value is close to $160 million.

MLB.com and the Denver Post first reported that Tulowitzki had agreed in principle to an extension that would keep him under contract with Colorado for another decade. The Rockies have scheduled a news conference for Tuesday.

Tulowitzki has three years left on his current six-year, $31 million contract; he's due to make $5.5 million next season, $8.5 million in 2012 and $10 million in 2013. His new deal is the second-largest contract in Colorado history behind Todd Helton's nine-year, $141.5 million deal.

Tulowitzki, 26, won his first Gold Glove and NL Silver Slugger awards this year, when he hit .315 with 27 homers and 95 RBIs despite missing 33 games with a broken wrist.

He finished fifth in the National League MVP voting behind Reds first baseman Joey Votto, Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols, Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez and Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez.

The Rockies also reached an agreement -- pending a physical -- with left-handed starter Jorge de la Rosa on a three-year, $32 million deal, with the third year a player option and the fourth year a team option. The Nationals, Orioles and Pirates had all expressed interest in him.

The 29-year-old De la Rosa, the No. 2 starter in the rotation behind Ubaldo Jimenez, went 8-7 with a 4.22 ERA in 20 starts for the Rockies last year. He missed more than two months last season because of a torn tendon in the middle finger of his pitching hand. In three seasons with Colorado, he's 34-24 with a 4.49 ERA.
