Mets' David Wright says he didn't deserve All-Star selection
New York Mets third baseman David Wright, who was left off this year's National League All-Star roster, said he didn't deserve to be selected, reports Newsday.
Wright is hitting .272 with seven home runs and 42 RBI, a pace which falls below his career norm when healthy. He came in second in fan voting to the Milwaukee Brewers' Aramis Ramirez, and wasn't selected either by the players' vote or by All-Star manager Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Second baseman Daniel Murphy was selected to be the Mets' representative after hitting .293 with seven home runs and 35 RBI, and Wright said Murphy deserved the honor.
"I would say I'm disappointed because I know I can play better than I did in the first half. That's more disappointing to me than not making the All-Star team.
"For me, I don't feel like I played to the standards I set for myself."
This marks the first season Wright hasn't made the All-Star Game since 2011, a season in which he played just 102 games due to injury. In his 11 MLB seasons, Wright has seven All-Star appearances.
