The Mets on Tuesday night announced that they have shut down third baseman David Wright for the remainder of the season.

The seven-time All-Star had been dealing with lingering shoulder issues since early June and went for another MRI on Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. The tests revealed persistent inflammation in the rotator cuff of his left shoulder, but surgery is not required.

For now, he will rest the shoulder and then begin a rehab program to come back for spring training.

In 134 games, the 31-year-old hit .269 with just eight home runs. The Mets are fourth in NL East and won Tuesday night at home vs. the Rockies.
