Reports: White Sox sign closer David Robertson, trade for Jeff Samardzija

The White Sox agreed to terms with former Yankees closer David Robertson and traded for A's starter Jeff Samardzija according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today and Jon Heyman of CBSSports, respectively. Robertson's deal is reported to be for four years and in excess of $40 million. Samardzija was traded to Oakland in July and finished with a record of 5-6, a 3.14 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 16 starts. Neither deal has been confirmed by the White Sox.

Robertson finished last season with 39 saves in 44 attempts and a 3.08 ERA. Considered the top available closer on the free agent market, Robertson was reportedly weighing offers from the White Sox, Yankees and Astros.
The Yankees, who recently signed left-handed reliever Andrew Miller to a four-year contract, will likely transition All-Star setup man DellinBetances into the closer’s role.
