ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) The Texas Rangers selected outfielder Delino DeShields in the draft of unprotected players on the final day of baseball's winter meetings.

DeShields was the eighth overall pick by Houston in the 2010 first-year amateur draft and had spent his entire professional career in the Astros organization before Texas took him in the Rule 5 draft Thursday.

After playing exclusively as a second baseman his first three pro seasons, he moved to the outfield last year. He is the 22-year-old son of former big leaguer Delino DeShields, who played for five teams from 1990-2002. The Rangers will have to keep DeShields on their major league roster all season or return him to the Astros.

Texas also Thursday signed right-handers Anthony Bass and Ross Wolf and switch-hitting outfielder Antoan Richardson to minor league contracts that included invitations to major league spring training.
