Texas 2B Odor delivers with bat, glove in win over Brewers

PHOENIX (AP) Texas second baseman Rougned Odor had three hits and made the defensive play of the game to start a double play as the Texas Rangers beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 Saturday.

Texas won for the first time in four Cactus League tries. Earlier in the day, the Rangers said injured ace Yu Darvish might need season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Brewers star Ryan Braun was hitless in his first two official at-bats of the spring. He struck out swinging against Ross Detwiler and later popped out.

Braun is hoping to rebound from right thumb problems that have hampered him the last two year. He said won't know until later in the spring if an off-season procedure cured the problem.

''We'll have a much better idea in 4 to 5 weeks,'' Braun said. ''Providing daily updates won't do anybody any good. We'll know a lot more at the end of the spring.''

Odor already had two hits by the time he turned in his gem in the third inning. The 21-year-old Venezuelan charged Scooter Gennett's chopper in front of second base - after it ticked off Detwiler's glove and slowed down - and completed a no-look shovel of the ball backward to shortstop Hanser Alberto to start a 4-6-3 double play.

''I went for it and it tipped off my glove and I felt like we weren't going to get any out there. Then here he comes,'' said Detwiler, making his first start for the Rangers. ''I'll take that all year long. It's expected now.''

Hector Gomez hit a two-run homer and an RBI single for the Brewers.

STARTING TIME

Rangers: The news on Darvish could put more pressure on the rest of the rotation. Detwiler, acquired from the Washington Nationals in December, allowed a run on four hits in 2 2-3 innings.

Detwiler said he is still hoping for good news on Darvish, but will concentrate on doing his own job.

''I think there is still some hope, we're certainly pulling for him,'' he said. ''He's a huge part of this team and you really want him in there. At the same time, injuries happen and you never know who or where it's going to be.''

Brewers: Wily Peralta scuffled a little in the first, but finished strong in his spring debut. He struck out the side in the second inning, getting Nate Schierholtz and Chris Gimenez on sliders and Adam Rosales with a fastball.

''I left the fastball up a little at first but I got better,'' he said. ''It's exciting to get back out there . but overall it was good. The last two batters I really had my rhythm.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Brewers: LHP Dontrelle Willis, who was expected to make his spring debut Saturday, was scratched with a sore neck and will be down for a day or two. ... INF Adam Lind is still nursing a back. He's had back issues in the past but this doesn't appear serious at this point.
