Brandon McCarthy goes 2 innings in Dodgers debut

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Brandon McCarthy pitched two innings in his Los Angeles Dodgers debut, a 4-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.

McCarthy gave up a run and two hits while striking out two. The slim right-hander signed a $48 million, four-year contract with the Dodgers on Dec. 16 after spending last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees.

Carlos Gomez hit an RBI double off McCarthy in the first inning to score Gerardo Parra, who singled.

''In the second inning I got back into it, settled down, came away with some positives and got to where I think I need to be,'' said the 6-foot-7 McCarthy, who was 7-5 with a 2.89 ERA in 14 starts for the Yankees after they acquired him in a trade with the Diamondbacks on July 6.

Dodgers outfielder Kyle Jensen, a non-roster invitee, hit a two-run homer in the eighth. Highly regarded prospect Corey Seager knocked in the winning run with a double to deep center in the bottom of the ninth.

Matt Clark homered for Milwaukee in the ninth to tie it. Hunter Morris had an RBI single in the fifth.

The loss left the Brewers with an 0-4 record in spring training.

''Guys need to start making plays,'' manager Ron Roenicke said. ''Just make the plays. We're not asking them to make super plays all the time. Just make the routine play.''

Roenicke saw one bright spot in starter Mike Fiers, who gave up one run, one hit, walked one and struck out three in 2 2-3 innings.

''Fastball, spotted it well,'' Roenicke said. ''Curveball was pretty good. Nice little changeup and cutter. So yeah, Mike did a good job again.''

TRAINER'S ROOM

Brewers: 1B Adam Lind has yet to appear in a spring game because of stiffness in his back. He stiffened up Thursday during fielding drills. Lind, acquired Nov. 1 from Toronto for pitcher Marco Estrada, has been dealing with back issues since 2011.

Dodgers: A shin bruise sustained Saturday by LF Carl Crawford is minor. Crawford was not scheduled to play Sunday but was slated to go through his usual workout, manager Don Mattingly said. Crawford fouled a pitch off his right shin against Cleveland. He left after the fourth inning to ice the bruise. ... INF Darnell Sweeney injured his left shoulder in a ninth-inning collision at first base. He'll know Monday whether it's serious.

DECISION TIME

Los Angeles infielder Alex Guerrero says he won't agree to play in the minor leagues. A clause in his contract gives him the right to say no. That means the Dodgers will have to waive him or trade him if they decide to open the season without him on the major league roster.

Guerrero, who signed a $28 million, four-year contract last year, told the Los Angeles Times on Saturday ''that the decision was theirs.''

This spring, he's been impressive with the bat. Through four games, Guerrero is hitting .667 with a homer and two RBIs. He didn't play Sunday.

Guerrero was a shortstop in Cuba, but the Dodgers tried him at second base last year. He wound up in Triple-A, where he batted .329 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 65 games.

This spring, the team is trying him at third base.

''We talked about giving him some versatility,'' Mattingly said.

Brewers: Jimmy Nelson gets his first spring start Monday against Kansas City. Nelson's work was slowed early in camp by a tight hamstring. He threw batting practice Friday. The right-hander was 2-9 with a 4.93 ER last season over 14 appearances, 12 starts.

Dodgers: Brett Anderson makes his first spring start Monday against the Giants in Scottsdale. Anderson, who signed a $10 million, one-year contract on Dec. 31, is projected to be the team's fourth or fifth starter. The left-hander is coming off back surgery after sustaining a herniated disk Aug. 5 in his eighth start for the Rockies. He was 1-3 with a 2.91 ERA in Colorado.
