Peralta, Ross help Diamondbacks blow out Giants 12-2

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) David Peralta and Cody Ross each drove in two runs, and Ender Inciarte had two hits and scored twice to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks over the San Francisco Giants 12-2 in a split-squad game Sunday.

Jeremy Hellickson, acquired in a trade last November with Tampa Bay, allowed one hit with a strikeout over two innings during his Diamondbacks debut.

''Kind of funny, I was a little bit nervous,'' Hellickson said. ''I don't think I've been nervous for a start since maybe my minor league debut. It was nice to get the first one out of the way.''

Jake Peavy's second spring training start for the Giants was a little better than his first, when he allowed two runs and four hits in one inning. This time, he gave up a run and three hits in two innings while striking out three and walking one.

''I felt quite a bit better than I did four days ago,'' Peavy said. ''It's another step in the right direction. A lot to work on as well, but it's fun seeing a little bit of progress.''

Arizona struck for five runs in the fourth inning, starting with a leadoff triple by Gerald Laird. Four of the runs came with two outs, helped by an error and a passed ball.

Peralta, a regular in the Diamondbacks' outfield the second half of last season, had two hits. He's trying to keep his place on the major league roster as a starter or reserve.

''I did my work. I felt really good and have felt that way the last few days,'' Peralta said in Spanish. ''Focused on things like always, doing the little things to help the team win.''

Nick Ahmed, in contention for an infield spot, added two hits and an RBI for the Diamondbacks.

The Giants committed three errors, two by shortstop Matt Duffy, who is trying to win a backup infield job.

GOOD WORK, SON

Giants fans, with little to cheer about in a blowout, sighed loudly when manager Bruce Bochy came out of the dugout to make a pitching change with two outs in the sixth. The pitcher removed from the game was Bochy's son, Brett, who allowed a run and two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

''He was approaching 30 pitches. He's been up pretty much every day and he's been on every trip,'' the elder Bochy said.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Giants: RHP Tim Hudson, coming off ankle surgery, threw batting practice and is slated for his first spring training start Wednesday. ... C Hector Sanchez was scratched from the split-squad game at the Diamondbacks' facility with a sprained thumb and replaced by Guillermo Quiroz. Arizona won that game 10-5. Sanchez is out two to four days, Bochy said. ... RHP Sergio Romo's shoulder soreness is gone. After a camp session Tuesday, he is scheduled to pitch in Wednesday's game. ... SS Brandon Crawford was the DH. He'll make his spring debut in the field Wednesday, Bochy said. Crawford has been dealing with a sore shoulder.

CALLING ON COLLMENTER

New manager Chip Hale picked right-hander Josh Collmenter to start on opening day for Arizona. Collmenter, who went 11-9 with a 3.46 ERA last season, threw two scoreless innings Saturday against Seattle. He has been a starter and reliever for the Diamondbacks.

FLASHING LEATHER

Each team turned in a defensive gem, starting with the Giants in the second inning. Inciarte's roller to first base went off Travis Ishikawa's glove and through his legs, but second baseman Joe Panik was there to back up the play and flipped the ball from his glove to Ishikawa for the out.

Ahmed, playing shortstop, raced into shallow left field to flag down a blooper from Panik, then turned and fired to second base for a double play to end the third inning.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY D-BACKS

Arizona celebrates 20 years (March 9, 1995) since being awarded a Major League Baseball franchise on Monday. Several surprise events are being planned around the greater Phoenix area during the day.
