LEADING OFF: Matt Cain tests ankle and elbow in first start

A look at the highlights of what's happening all around spring training in Florida and Arizona today:

---

ON THE MEND

San Francisco pitcher Matt Cain makes his spring training debut against the Dodgers in Scottsdale, Arizona. Coming back from ankle and elbow operations, the three-time All-Star hasn't thrown since July 9, missing out on the Giants' World Series run.

OH, NO!

The Phillies might learn more about ace Cliff Lee's ailing left elbow. He was limited to 13 starts last year and recently felt more soreness. He's out of action for now with inflammation, and is seeking a second opinion from noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews.

INJURY BUG

Cardinals pitcher Lance Lynn became the latest notable player to get hurt this spring when he left his first start with a strain in his left hip. He'll be reevaluated to determine the extent of the problem.

HE'S TRYIN'

Edwin Jackson makes his exhibition debut as the high-hope Chicago Cubs try again for their first win this spring, taking on San Diego. Jackson is aiming to hold onto his rotation spot after two poor seasons, including 6-15 with a 6.33 ERA last year.

ANOTHER STUD

Yet another ace makes his spring debut for the pitching-rich Washington Nationals. This time, Gio Gonzalez gets to start, facing Atlanta in Viera, Florida. A 20-game winner in 2012, the left-hander could be slotted fourth in the rotation behind Max Scherzer, Jordan Zimmermann and Stephen Strasburg.
