Free agent pitcher Roman Madrid suspended 50 games

NEW YORK (AP) Free agent right-hander Roman Madrid has been suspended for 50 games under baseball's minor league drug program following a positive test for a banned amphetamine.

The suspension, announced Monday, will start when he signs with another major league organization.

The 24-year-old was 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA in 12 relief appearances last year for Class A Lake Elsinore of San Diego's organization, then was released Saturday. The Padres selected him on the seventh round of the 2012 amateur draft.

There have been 39 suspensions this year under the minor league program.
