Ishikawa, Bumgarner help Giants beat White Sox

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) Will Ferrell got all the attention. The San Francisco Giants liked what they saw from Travis Ishikawa and Madison Bumgarner, too.

Travis Ishikawa hit his first home run of the spring and Madison Bumgarner improved on his first two spring outings, allowing one earned run to help the Giants beat the Chicago White Sox 7-4 on Thursday night.

Brandon Hicks also homered for the Giants, who won for just the third time in 10 games in the Cactus League.

''It's been a rough go for us,'' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ''But the boys played well.''

Ishikawa, whose walk-off home run won the National League pennant against the St. Louis Cardinals last October, connected on the first pitch against Erik Johnson in the fifth inning. The blast, which landed well up on the berm in right-center field, scored Buster Posey who reached on a walk. In his other trips to the plate, the San Francisco first baseman walked three times. He scored three runs.

''I'm going to have lead him off if he keeps scoring all those runs,'' Bochy said of Ishikawa.

Bumgarner gave up three hits in the first and two runs, one earned, but retired the last six Chicago batters he faced. He came out after 2 2/3 innings with no walks and three strikeouts. In his first two spring starts, the World Series MVP was shelled for six runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Alexei Ramirez drove in three runs for Chicago, including a two-run single off Bumgarner. David Robertson, in his second spring appearance for the White Sox, gave up three hits and two runs with a walk and a hit batsman.

Ferrell appeared in the game in the bottom of the ninth for both teams as part of the funnyman's 10-team blitz through the Phoenix area in behalf of cancer research. It was the fourth of his five stops on Thursday.

For the White Sox, he struck out against Jean Machi after fouling off a 2-2 fastball. Then he switched to the Giants, put on the catcher's gear and signaled for four intentional balls against Chicago non-roster player Joey DeMichele before Bochy came out of the dugout and removed Ferrell from the game.

Giants: Bumgarner was pleased after his best spring outing yet.

''Everything felt really good today,'' the left-hander said. ''The changeup was kinda like it has been but in the third inning I started getting a feel for it. The curveball is not quite there yet. I'd like to have it come in a little better, but it's better than it's ever been this early.

''The fastball and cutter felt really good the whole game.''

White Sox: Hector Noesi made his second spring start and gave up two hits and a run in three innings. The run scored on Hector Sanchez's double in the second inning. Zach Putnam gave up the homer to Hicks in the ninth inning.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT

While Ferrell is making history of sorts by playing 10 positions (including DH) in five Cactus League games in one day, Posey played all nine defensive positions in a game at Florida State.

On May 12, 2008, Posey accomplished the feat in a game against Savannah State. He hit a grand slam in that game, and during his pitching stint, struck out both batters he faced.

TEAM CONNECTION

Giants shortstop Ehire Adrianza, the godson of former White Sox manager and shortstop Ozzie Guillen, singled in his first at-bat on Thursday. He then was thrown out attempting to steal by Tyler Flowers. Adrianza finished 1 for 2 and was also hit by a pitch.
