PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) Tyson Ross gave up one hit in five shutout innings, Cameron Maybin hit a two-run double and the San Diego Padres defeated the Chicago White Sox 10-4 Monday.

The only hit allowed by Ross was a lazy fly to center by Conor Gillaspie in the fourth that landed for a double when Maybin lost it in the sun.

''I set a good tempo early, and I was able to execute some pitches,'' said Ross, who struck out five and walked one.

The right-hander is looking forward to being part of a Padres rotation that also includes James Shields and Andrew Cashner.

''This whole staff, it's great. There's a nice little competition within us. We're feeding off the energy from each other,'' Ross said. ''It's going to be a lot of fun all season long.''

Jedd Gyorko had three hits for the Padres. Cory Spangenberg tripled, singled and drove in three runs.

Jose Quintana carried a shutout into the fifth for Chicago but wound up allowing four runs on eight hits in 4 1-3 innings.

Yonder Alonso and Carlos Quentin had RBI singles in San Diego's five-run fifth.

Andy Wilkins hit a three-run double for the White Sox in the ninth.

STARTING TIME

White Sox: Quintana walked two and did not strike out a batter. He said ''for now'' he's been tabbed to start the second game of the season.

''The second day is my day,'' he said. ''I want to be ready for the start.''

Padres: Ross threw 50 strikes in 80 pitches. Aside from the strikeouts, he was more than happy to have hitters beating his slider into the ground.

''There's not going to be too much damage done when they're hitting the ball on the ground,'' he said.

TRAINER'S ROOM

White Sox: LHP Chris Sale, recovering from a Feb. 27 foot injury, is set to throw a bullpen session Tuesday. He is not expected to be ready for the start of the season, but the White Sox hope he will not miss significant time. Though no formal announcement has been made, Jeff Samardzija is expected to start the opener, April 6 at Kansas City.

SOLARTE IMPRESSES

Padres manager Bud Black likes what he sees from infielder Yangervis Solarte, a utility player acquired last season from the New York Yankees in a trade for Chase Headley.

Solarte hit .267 and helped the Padres to a 36-31 record after the All-Star game. This spring, he's hitting .317 while playing first base, second and third.

''He's done a nice job moving around the diamond,'' Black said. ''The versatility he brings is very advantageous for us. It's a big part of his game.

''He gives you the versatility to feel good about making a double switch and not losing anything on defense. He gives you the switch-hitting component offensively. We can move him around the diamond. We feel good about Solarte.''

NEW ADDITION

The White Sox acquired infielder Neftali Soto from Cincinnati for cash. He will report to minor league camp with Triple-A Charlotte.
