The San Diego Padres will place pitcher Ian Kennedy on the disabled list Friday after selecting the contract of minor league pitcher Chris Rearick from Triple A El Paso Chihuahuas, according to a San Diego Union-Tribunereport.

Kennedy left Thursday night's game against San Francisco with a hamstring strain with one out in the top of the third inning.

He appeared to be in discomfort after throwing a pitch to Giants batter Nori Aoki. Kennedy had walked and struck out two batters, yielded two hits and given up no runs until that point.

Rearick, 27, will be making his major league debut most likely in a relief role, while Odrisamer Despaigne will assume a role in the starting rotation.

Rearick posted a 2.72 ERA in 33 appearances last season for the Chihuahuas. He was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2010 in the 41st round.

Thursday night's start was Kennedy's first of the season. The 30-year-old right-hander went 13-13 last season for San Diego, with a 3.63 ERA.
