NEW YORK (AP) The New York Yankees signed right-hander Kyle Davies to a major league contract Sunday and called him up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Davies has not pitched in the majors since 2011, when he sustained a shoulder injury that required surgery. Davies is 43-65 with a 5.59 ERA in seven seasons with Kansas City and Atlanta. He may be best known for allowing new teammate Alex Rodriguez's 500th career homer on Aug. 4, 2007.
''We need distance in our bullpen and that's what he provides,'' manager Joe Girardi said.
Davies gets $800,000 while on the major league roster and $150,000 while in the minors.
To make room for Davies on the 25-man roster, the Yankees designated left-hander Matt Tracy for assignment a day after he gave up three unearned runs in his big league debut.
New York called up Tracy after its bullpen was depleted in the 19-inning loss to Boston on Friday night.
