Indians place Aviles on family emergency medical list

CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Indians have placed utility man Mike Aviles on the family emergency medical list.

The team made the announcement before Friday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Players can remain on the family medical emergency list for three to seven days.

Indians manager Terry Francona said he couldn't provide many details, and added, ''It's a personal, family, very serious matter that we found about yesterday. Mikey knows he has our blessings to do what he needs to do.''

Aviles is batting .288 with two home runs and four RBIs in 19 games. He has played at shortstop, third base and the outfield.

Infielder/outfielder Zach Walters has been called up from Triple-A Columbus. The switch-hitter was batting .239 with one homer and nine RBIs in 13 games with Columbus.
