The Detroit Tigers will activate designated hitter Victor Martinez from the disabled list on Friday in time for a weekend series against the New York Yankees, the team announced Thursday. Outfielder Tyler Collins will be sent down to Triple A in a corresponding move.

Martinez has not played since May 18 because of a knee injury. He had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee in February and started feeling sore again in May.

"I talked to him," manager Brad Ausmus told reporters, according to The Detroit News. "He says he feels good. He seems to feel like he's ready. I would have been more surprised if he said he wasn't ready."

Martinez is a switch hitter and the knee especially bothered him when he batted left-handed. With the Yankees scheduled to start three right-handed pitchers this weekend, Martinez will be forced to bat left-handed often.

Martinez, who finished second in MVP voting last season to Mike Trout, is batting .216 with just four extra-base hits in 34 games this season.
