De La Rosa outpitches Shields as D-backs beat Padres 4-2

PHOENIX (AP) Rubby De La Rosa had two things going for him Friday night - a better handle on his two-seam fastball and a good rapport with catcher Welington Castillo.

That was all De La Rosa needed to fluster the San Diego Padres, who left 11 runners on base in Arizona's 4-2 win as the Diamondbacks handed James Shields his first loss of the season.

''Pitching down, down in the zone, and me and Castillo were staying on the same page. I just tried to stay focused and throw to him,'' De La Rosa said after allowing one earned run and five hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked three.

''He is a young guy finding his way. It's the first time someone is allowing him to go out there,'' Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said of the 26-year-old De La Rosa, new to the club this season. ''If he has two or three bad outings he goes back to the minor leagues (in the past). We have committed to him.''

Arizona scored three times in the third on RBI doubles by Aaron Hill and Castillo, along with Nick Ahmed's run-scoring single. Paul Goldschmidt walked and David Peralta doubled to start the rally.

Another run was taken off the board when Goldschmidt, originally ruled safe on a passed ball and tag play at home plate, was called out after a Padres challenge and replay review.

''You get two outs and a man on third you're thinking, we had a golden opportunity to really put something on them,'' Hale said. ''Then we got the three hits in a row, beautiful. That was probably the biggest part of the game for us.''

Shields (7-1) struggled with control for much of his outing, walking four, hitting a batter and uncorking two wild pitches. He allowed four runs and eight hits over six innings in his 15th start of the season.

''It wasn't his best outing, but he's a fighter,'' Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said. ''We could have done some things to help him a little bit more, but I always feel great when you have a winner out on the mound.''

De La Rosa (6-3) ran into some trouble in the fifth when two singles and two walks, all with two outs, produced the Padres' first run. De La Rosa had a 12-inning scoreless streak until then.

San Diego scored again in the eighth on Cory Spangenberg's sacrifice fly after a pair of Diamondbacks throwing errors and a walk.

Brad Ziegler earned a save in his 500th career appearance, escaping in the ninth after the Padres put runners on second and third with two outs.

The Diamondbacks, winners of six of their last eight games, went ahead in the first when Goldschmidt drove in A.J. Pollock with a groundout.

PADDED DOUBLE

Pollock was credited with a ground-rule double leading off the first when he hit a drive to left field and the ball got stuck between pieces of padding on the wall on the fly.

BACK IN THE BIGS

The Padres called up infielder Brett Wallace from Triple-A El Paso and optioned right-hander Cory Mazzoni in a corresponding move.

The 28-year-old Wallace was added to the 40-man roster when the club designated pitcher Eury De La Rosa for assignment. Wallace, who entered as a pinch-hitter late in the game, is back in the majors for the first time since 2013 with Houston. He's reunited with Murphy, his head coach in college at Arizona State.

Mazzoni allowed 20 earned runs in 8 2-3 innings over eight appearances.

TRAINER'S ROOM

Padres: RHP Josh Johnson, coming back from Tommy John surgery, threw a simulated game Monday and left early with tingling in his fingers. Murphy said he didn't know more beyond Johnson being scheduled for an MRI.

Diamondbacks: RF Yasmany Tomas was hit on the left elbow by a first-inning pitch from Shields that registered 89 mph. Tomas was checked by trainers but stayed in the game for the moment. He made a diving catch of a sinking liner from Yangervis Solarte for the first out of the third inning, then was replaced by Danny Dorn to start the fourth. Tomas has a bruise and X-rays were negative, the club announced. Hale said he'll likely give Tomas off on Saturday. ... RHP Archie Bradley threw 54 pitches in a simulated game Thursday. He's been on the 15-day disabled list since June 4 with right shoulder tendinitis.

Padres: RHP Tyson Ross pitches Saturday against the Diamondbacks. Ross (3-7) has lost his last two starts and leads the team in walks with 42 and wild pitches with seven.

Diamondbacks: LHP Robbie Ray will make his fifth start of the season and the first of his career against the Padres. He's 2-1 with a 1.09 ERA.
