Tigers' JD Martinez hit 3 homers in 6 innings against Yanks

NEW YORK (AP) Detroit's J.D. Martinez has homered three times and drove in six runs through six innings against the New York Yankees on Sunday.

Martinez connected off Masahiro Tanaka with two outs in the first inning. He struck out looking in the third inning and led off the fifth with another homer against Tanaka.

He then went deep off Danny Burawa with two on in the sixth to give the Tigers an 11-2 lead. Burawa was making his major league debut.

With a chance to tie the major league record, Martinez flied out to right in the eighth.

This was the first multihomer game of Martinez's career, and it was the first three-homer game for Detroit since Miguel Cabrera did it at Texas on May 19, 2013.
