Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez is out for the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder on Tuesday, reports MLB.com's Joe Frisaro.

Dr. James Andrews performed Alvarez's surgery to repair a tear in the shoulder. There is no timetable for his recovery, and Marlins manager Dan Jennings said it is "to be determined" if Alvarez will be ready for spring training in 2016.

Alvarez started on Opening Day for Miami, but injuries quickly derailed his season. After posting a 12-7 record and 2.65 ERA in 30 starts last season, Alvarez was 0-4 with a 6.45 ERA in four starts in 2015.

The Marlins acquired Alvarez from the Toronto Blue Jays before the start of the 2013 season. In five seasons, Alvarez has a career record of 27-34 and a 3.80 ERA.
