Joba Chamberlain, Wandy Rodriguez to sign with Royals

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to sign veteran pitchers Joba Chamberlain and Wandy Rodriguez to minor-league contracts, the team announced Sunday.
Both players will report to the Royals’ Triple A affiliate in Omaha, according to Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star.
Rodriguez was released by the Texas Rangers earlier this month after posting a 4.90 ERA in 86 1/3 innings. In his final appearance for Texas, Rodriguez allowed seven runs on six hits and three walks in just one inning.
Chamberlain was released by the Detroit Tigers in July and later signed with the Toronto Blue Jays on a minor-league deal. He exercised an opt-out clause in his contract last week and became a free agent.

Chamberlain had a 4.09 ERA in 22 innings for the Tigers. He allowed five home runs and blew two saves. In five innings for Toronto’s Triple A affiliate, Chamberlain allowed 10 runs (eight earned) and nine hits.
The Royals have used 20 pitchers this season, tied for the second-fewest in the majors. Their staff ERA of 3.56 is eighth-best in the majors and their bullpen ERA of 2.46 is the second-best.
