The MLB hot stove is picking up steam with the MLB Winter Meetings set to start this weekend. Free agent and trade rumors continue to swirl, and we’ll likely see plenty of movement over the five days of meetings in Nashville.

• The Toronto Blue Jays named Ross Atkins their new general manager, the team announced on Thursday.

• Veteran lefty Cliff Lee has been medically cleared to return to the mound and could make himself available in free agency, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. He missed all of last season with a torn flexor tendon.

Chat Sports: Free agent Ben Zobrist targeted by several MLB teams

• The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a two-year, $16 million deal with free-agent righty Mike Pelfrey, Joel Sherman of the New York Postreports.

• The San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers have all shown interest in free-agent second baseman Chase Utley, according to multiple reports. The Padres are the latest to join the fray for Utley, reports ESPN’s Jayson Stark.

• The Washington Nationals are expected to shop second baseman Yunel Escobar at the Winter Meetings, reports Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
