The Pittsburgh Pirates sign infielder David Freese to one-year deal worth $3 million, the team announced.

The team has designated left-handed pitcher Jesse Biddle for assignment in order to make room for Freese.

Freese is coming off a season in which he hit .257 with 14 home runs in 121 games for the Los Angeles Angels. He has spent the last two seasons in Los Angeles after playing seven years with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Pirates also has Jung Ho Kang and Josh Harrison under contract to play second and third base, which points toward Freese adding depth to the infield.

Freese will turn 33 on April 28.
