The San Diego Padres have signed first baseman James Loney to a minor-league deal, reports Buster Olney of ESPN.

Loney, 31, was released by the Tampa Bay Rays just before the start of the regular season after failing to make the 25-man roster. The Rays are still on the hook for $8 million that was left on a three-year, $21 million deal.

Tampa Bay had attempted to trade Loney, but couldn’t find a team to take on his contract.

The details of Loney’s contract with San Diego have not yet been released.

Loney played in 104 games last season, hitting .280 with four home runs and 32 RBIs.
