Nick Swisher working out, awaiting next opportunity

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Nick Swisher is set to rejoin the New York Yankees on a minor league contract.

Swisher took batting practice and worked out at first base Saturday at the Yankees' minor league complex in Florida.

Several team officials were involved in the session.

A team spokesman said a deal is expected to be completed.

''The fact they let me come out here and work is great,'' Swisher said. ''It keeps me in the game, keeps me going strong, and I appreciate that. This place is like family.''

''I still feel like I can do this,'' Swisher added.

The 35-year-old infielder/outfielder, who played for the Yankees from 2009-12, asked if he could work out at the complex and the team said yes.

Swisher would provide depth, especially at first base. Infielder Dustin Ackley, who has limited experience at first, is the backup to Mark Teixeira.

''He's going to start working out and then join our Triple-A club. We want to make sure he's right and ready before we even think about what we want to do with him,'' Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Saturday. ''We don't really have a full-time first baseman right now, and that's certainly something Swish can do.''

Swisher was released by Atlanta late in spring training. He has been slowed the past couple years by knee injuries.
