San Francisco Giants reliever Sergio Romo has been placed on the disabled list with a flexor strain in his right elbow, the team announced Thursday.

According to manager Bruce Bochy, the Giants will completely shut down Romo for two weeks before reevaluating the injury.

“He needs a couple weeks without throwing,” Bochy said Thursday. “He's going to be down for awhile. I can't tell you how long.”

Romo has opened this season as the setup man for closer Santiago Casilla. However, Bochy is known for mixing up the closer role often, and Romo spent significant time closing in 2013 and 2014.

The Giants (6–4) are currently first in the NL West standings.
