After he was thrown at by starter Noah Syndergaard in the third inning, a pitch which led to Syndergaard’s immediate ejection, Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley homered twice against the Mets on Saturday night.
In the sixth inning of a scoreless game, Utley led off the frame by taking an off-speed pitch from lefthander Logan Verrett out to centerfield for his third roundtripper of the season. Then, with the bases loaded in the seventh and the Dodgers ahead 2–0, Utley smacked one to right-center to put Los Angeles up 6–0.
Syndergaard’s pitch to Utley in the third came at 99 mph, and missed his back by about a foot. After Syndergaard was tossed, manager Terry Collins came out and was ejected for arguing.
The tension between the Mets and Utley dates back to last postseason, when Utley broke shortstop Ruben Tejada’s leg on a late slide into second base in Game 2 of the National League Division Series.
This is the sixth game the Mets and Dodgers have played this season; they played a four-game set in Los Angeles, and one game in New York on Friday. The Mets didn’t seek retaliation for the slide in the three games to follow the slide, either.
