With a double in the ninth inning on Wednesday, Ichiro Suzuki passed Pete Rose’s career hits record.
If you add up his stats between Japan, where he had 1,278 hits, and Major League Baseball, where he now has 2,979, the Miami outfielder has surpassed Rose’s MLB record mark of 4,256.
Ichiro led off the game with an infield single against Luis Perdomo to tie the unofficial mark.
In the ninth, he passed Rose with a two-base hit off Fernando Rodney.
Rose said this week that he thinks Ichiro’s hits in Japan should not count toward the record.
Ichiro, now 42, joined Major League Baseball and the Seattle Mariners in 2001 at the age of 27. He won rookie of the year and the American League MVP award in his first season, in which he won the batting title and led baseball with 242 hits. He amassed 200-plus hits in his first 10 seasons, making the All-Star game and winning a Gold Glove award all ten times.
He is likely to become the 30th player to reach 3,000 hits in MLB history this season.
