Mets place pitcher Jon Niese on 15-day DL with left knee injury
The New York Mets have placed pitcher Jon Niese on the 15-day disabled list with a knee injury, the team announced
Niese left his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday in the first inning with left knee pain.
Niese faced four batters, walking two, and was charged with three earned runs before exiting the game. Mets relievers picked up the slack allowing only one earned run in the final 8 2/3 innings of New York's 7–4 victory.
Mets manager Terry Collins discussed Niese’s knee pain before the game, but said the pitcher warmed up for the start without any issues.
Niese (8–7, 5.50 ERA) is the latest Mets starter to experience injury issues this season. Earlier this month New York placed Steven Matz on the 15-day disabled list. Matt Harvey is out for the season, while Zack Wheeler is unlikely to return from Tommy John surgery.
The Mets' victory pushed their record to 63–62, 3.5 games back of the Cardinals for the second wild-card spot in the National League.
