With Ryan Howard having left after last season—following shortstop Jimmy Rollins, catcher Carlos Ruiz, pitcher Cole Hamels and second baseman Chase Utley out of the city of Brotherly Love in recent years—the core that anchored the Phillies' five straight NL East titles from 2007 to '11 and their 2008 World Series championship is now history. Philadelphia’s long overdue rebuilding effort has yet to pay full dividends, but the club hit the jackpot when it chose Herrera in the 2014 Rule 5 draft. In the span of two years, he went from being buried on the Rangers organization's middle infield depth chart to becoming an All-Star centerfielder and a foundational piece of their future thanks to a five-year, $30.5 million extension he signed in December 2016.
