Athletics Trade Sonny Gray to Yankees For Prospects
The Oakland Athletics have agreed to trade pitcher Sonny Gray to the New York Yankees, the teams announced. The Yankees will send two injured prospects in Dustin Fowler (knee) and James Kaprielian (Tommy John surgery) along with Jorge Mateo to Oakland, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.
The deal was first reported by Jack Curry of the YES Network.
Gray, 27, is one of the top pitchers on the trade market, with a 3.43 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 94 strikeouts in 97 innings for the A’s this season and a 6–5 record. He is 44–26 in his five seasons in Oakland.
In anticipation of the trade, Oakland pushed Gray's start scheduled for Sunday against the Minnesota Twins to Monday night's contest against the San Francisco Giants.
Gray remains under team control until 2019. The Yankees will also reportedly receive $1.5 million in international bonus money.
The Yankees have been very active around the trade deadline by acquiring Jaime Garcia from the Minnesota Twins and bolstering their bullpen with David Robertson and Tommy Kahnle in a deal with the Chicago Cubs.
New York's top prospects like Gleybar Torres or Clint Frazier were not on the table and they progressed Oakland's trade talks with their next tier of their prospects.
The Yankees sit atop the American League East with a 56–47 record going into the trade deadline. The Red Sox, who acquired Mets closer Addison Reed on Monday morning, are .5 games behind.
