Report: Padres to Hire Rangers' Jayce Tingler as Manager

The Padres will reportedly hire Jayce Tingler of the Rangers as their next manager, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Tingler, 38, is currently managing Leones del Escogido in the Dominican winter league after spending the season as the Rangers' Major League Player Development Field Coordinator.

Braves third base coach Ron Washington and former Padres player Mark Loretta were also in the running for the job. The Padres started their search for a new skipper after firing Andy Green on Sept. 21. San Diego posted a 274–366 record during Green's almost four-season tenure.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports Padres general manager A.J. Preller visited Tingler in the Dominican Republic on Monday. Sources told the newspaper that Tingler has been "Preller's favorite from the start to replace Andy Green."

Preller and Tingler previously worked together in the Rangers' organization. Tingler played in the minors for four seasons and spent his last in 2006 in Texas' system. Preller served as the Rangers' assistant GM at the time. After the 2006 season, Tingler started his coaching career with the Rangers.

The Padres finished 2019 in last place in the National League West at 70–92.
