Zack Greinke Tells MLB Teams He Wants to Pitch Again After Lackluster Season

The 40-year-old former Cy Young winner is one of the oldest players in baseball.

If 2023 was the end for pitcher Zack Greinke, it probably wasn't the one he envisioned.

In his second season back with the Royals after over a decade away, Greinke went 2-15 with a 5.06 ERA in 142 1/3 innings pitched. It was the then-39-year-old's worst-ever winning percentage, and his highest ERA since his age-21 season in 2005.

Now 40, Greinke is reportedly eager to give pitching another shot. Per a Tuesday afternoon report from MLB Network's Jon Morosi, "Greinke's representatives have communicated to MLB teams that he's preparing to pitch in 2024 and is open to contract talks."

This would be Greinke's 21st season, and would come on the heels of a year where he was already the third-oldest player in the American League.

Greinke, a six-time All-Star and the 2009 AL Cy Young winner, is 225-156 lifetime with a 3.49 ERA and 2,979 strikeouts. He has spent time with Kansas City, the Brewers, the Angels, the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks and the Astros over the course of his career.
