Orioles Acquire Corbin Burnes in Blockbuster Trade With Brewers
The Baltimore Orioles agreed to a blockbuster trade to acquire starting pitcher Corbin Burnes from the Milwaukee Brewers, the team announced Thursday.
Just a couple of days after it was reported that John Angelos would be selling the team for $1.7 billion to an ownership group that includes franchise legend Cal Ripken Jr., the Orioles are preparing to make a significant splash on the trade market in the deal to acquire Burnes.
In exchange for Burnes, the Brewers are set to receive standout prospect Joey Ortiz and left-handed pitcher DL Hall, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Ortiz, an infielder, ranked as the No. 99 prospect in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 in 2023, and Hall was Baltimore’s No. 5 prospect as recently as ’22. Additionally, the Orioles will receive the No. 34 pick in the 2024 MLB draft, a Competitive Balance Round A selection.
Burnes, 29, had a 3.39 ERA with 200 strikeouts across 193 2/3 innings last year. He’s made the All-Star Game in each of the past three seasons, a span across which he’s registered a 2.94 ERA in 93 starts. The right-hander figures to be the ace of Baltimore’s pitching rotation in 2024.
In 2023, the Orioles won the American League East for the first time since 2014 and recorded their first 100+ win season since 1980. They’ve managed to further buff up one of baseball’s most exciting rosters with the addition of Burnes, who is two years removed from winning the National League Cy Young.
