Houston Astros Former Top Prospect Called Up For First Time Since 2015

In this story:
It's been quite the journey for one of the most promising young talents in baseball, Jon Singleton.
He was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the eighth round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Two years later, he was traded to the Houston Astros in a package that sent Hunter Pence to the Phillies.
After the 2011 season, Baseball America rated Singleton as the top prospect in the Astros' farm system.
Following that season, some of his off the field issues start occurring. He was suspended 50 games for a second failed marijuana test during the Arizona Fall League.
Despite some of his troubles, the first baseman got his opportunity with Houston in 2014, playing in 95 games. He recorded a slash line of .168/.285/.335 with 13 home runs and 44 RBI.
The next year, he mainly played minor league baseball, only appearing in 19 games for the Astros.
In 2018, he was suspended 100 games by the MLB for his third failed drug test. This caused Houston to release him outright and go to Mexico to play baseball in 2021.
Singleton signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, working his way up the majors again where he appeared in 11 games earlier this season. After being DFA'd, he opted into free agency where he signed with the Astros for his second stint with the organization.
Now, AP Sports Writer Kristie Rieken reports that Singleton has been called up will play in the majors with Houston for the first time since 2015.
After contemplating quitting baseball forever after his third suspension and release, it has come full circle for Singleton at 31, who is getting another opportunity to try and be a major league player.
He'll be making his first appearance in the upcoming series with the Baltimore Orioles that starts Tuesday.
