The Atlanta Braves are one step closer to getting a top tier starting pitching option back as Kyle Wright is set for a rehab assignment this Thursday in High-A Rome.

Wright, 27, led all of MLB in wins last season with 21, finishing 10th in National League Cy Young voting. But 2023's been a lost season for the righthander. The start to his spring training was delayed by lingering effects of the cortisone shot he got in his shoulder in late January and he opened the season on the injured list, but he eventually was able to make it back to the mound in mid-April for five starts.

The quality of those starts wasn't quite where he wanted, with Wright limited by both pitch count and effectiveness, finishing the stretch with an 0-1 record and 5.79 ERA across just 18.2 innings. He struck out twenty batters, but walked ten, and was charged with 23 hits as Atlanta went 3-2 in in that stretch.

Wright was placed on the 60-day injured list in early May and completely shut down from throwing for several weeks, with him just recently transitioning to Florida to throw live batting practice against hitters at Atlanta's spring training complex in North Port.

The rule of thumb is a rehab start for each week to ten days you were not throwing, so Wright's in line for four to six rehab outings before he would be ready to return to the MLB rotation, which lines up for a potential debut in late September for Atlanta to see both how he feels and how effective he might be before the postseason.
