The Atlanta Braves got into New York early last night from their series in Pittsburgh and are ready for a weekend of baseball with one of their biggest rivals in the New York Mets. Even with New York having traded Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and four others at the trade deadline, it's still a big matchup for the two teams that have exactly zero love for each other.

Atlanta's sitting at 72-41 (and 1st place in the NL East) while the New York Mets are 52-62 and hoping to keep losing - because of their payroll figures rocketing through multiple competitive balance tax thresholds, their first pick will get dropped back multiple spots in the first round...unless it's in the top six picks and subject to MLB's new rules for the draft lottery instead of the CBT rules for high-spenders from large markets.

Here's how the Braves will line up for the contest: It's

Atlanta's stepped up their rotations at catcher in the last few weeks, with Travis d'Arnaud getting his fourth start in the last six games against his old team (d'Arnaud played for the Mets from 2013-2018 until being abruptly designated for assignment by them in April of 2019.

Pitching Matchup for the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets on Friday, August 11th

Starting for Atlanta is Charlie Morton. 10-10 with a 3.86 ERA in his 22 starts this season, Morton's having a weird year: He has the highest percentage of outings that have resulted in decisions of any full-time starter in baseball. He's faced the Mets twice in 2023, going 0-1 with a combined eight earned runs in his ten innings on the season. He's walked seven, struck out eleven, and allowed ten hits (two homeruns) in those two games, a 5-3 Mets home win on May 1st and a 7-5 Braves home win on June 7th.

Facing off against the Braves is Tylor Megill. A 2018 8th rounder out of the University of Arizona, Megill is 6-5 with a 5.45 ERA in his 16 starts this season for New York. He started opposite Morton in that May 1st game in New York, going 5.2 innings with four hits and three runs for a no-decision in New York's 5-3 win. No currently rostered Atlanta Braves has outstanding success in the past against Megill, but he has surrendered homeruns to Ozzie Albies (4-15, HR, 3 RBIs) and Austin Riley (3-16, HR, RBI).
