Atlanta options Jared Shuster to Gwinnett, selects contract of LHP Danny Young

The Atlanta Braves continue to shuffle around their big-league pitching staff in the wake of the IL stints to both Max Fried and Kyle Wright, with Jared Shuster once again being sent down immediately following a big-league start.
The #Braves today selected LHP Danny Young to the major league roster after optioning LHP Jared Shuster to Triple-A Gwinnett following last night’s game. To make room on the 40-man roster, Atlanta designated RHP Seth Elledge for assignment.

Shuster started on Friday night for the Braves in their 5-4 loss to the Padres, going four innings with six hits, four earned runs, and four walks to four strikeouts in ninety-one pitches (fifty-two strikes). On the season, Shuster has a 8.31 ERA across his two starts with twelve hits and eight runs in his 8.2 innings of work.
In a perfect world, he'd be pitching every 5th day in Gwinnett and honing the secondaries, as well as working on command, to be a reliable back of the rotation option for the Braves in the future. But with Max Fried (hamstring) joining Kyle Wright (shoulder) on the IL, Atlanta needed to turn to the youngster.
With the option, he has three moves to the minors left this season - under the new CBA, players still have three seasons with which they can get optioned to the minors, but instead of unlimited transactions during that option year, teams are restricted to moving a player down five times per season.
Taking his place on the roster is LHP Danny Young. 28 years old, Young was an 8th round pick in 2015 out of the University of Florida by the Toronto Blue Jays. Debuting in 2022 with the Seattle Mariners, he was designated for assignment in August 2022 and claimed by the Braves off of waivers.
He appeared in one game for Atlanta after the transaction, going 2.2 innings against the Mets on August 15th to finish a 13-1 Braves victory. He faced twelve batters, allowing four hits, notching one strikeout, and coming one out away from an 3-inning save.
Being designated for assignment is RHP Seth Elledge. A 4th round pick by the Mariners in 2017 out of Dallas Baptist, he was traded to St. Louis in 2018 and signed a minor league contract with Atlanta last March. He spent the year in the minors, making 41 appearances for AAA Gwinnett with a 3.88 ERA in 46.1 innings with three saves.
