Could Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski Reach MLB Milestone Not Seen In Seven Years?

MLB hasn't had a pitcher reach 300 strikeouts in a season since 2019, when New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole racked up 326 punchouts during his final campaign with the Houston Astros.

Could Milwaukee Brewers star Jacob Misiorowski end the drought this year?

Misiorowski entered Tuesday leading MLB in strikeouts with 204, which are 19 more than Cleveland Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams, who's in second place.

The Miz recorded nine strikeouts over six innings during the Brewers' 4-3 win vs. the Minnesota Twins on Sunday, making him the second-fastest pitcher in MLB history to reach 200 punchouts in a single season at 129 1/3 innings.

Barring injury, the only thing that could keep Misiorowski from reaching 300 is Milwaukee limiting his workload.

With the Brewers holding a five-game lead atop the NL Central, the team would be smart to play it safe with their No. 1 starter. Misiorowski's health will be paramount if Milwaukee wants to advance deep in the postseason.

Even if his innings are cut back during the rest of the regular season though, he could potentially still reach 300 strikeouts. Misiorowski's currently at 133 innings covering 22 starts, which is just shy of last year's career high total of 141 1/3 frames (including the minor leagues and playoffs).

For what it's worth, FanGraphs projects Misiorowski to finish the campaign with a league-leading 278 strikeouts in 181 innings across 30 starts. That would be the most strikeouts for a pitcher since Atlanta Braves flamethrower Spencer Strider had 281 in 2023.

Misiorowski Reaching 300 Strikeouts 'Outrageous -- But Also Doable'

The Brewers haven't listed their probable pitchers for the massive upcoming four-game set vs, the Los Angeles Dodgers, but Misiorowski will almost certainly start one of them.

Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer predicted Tuesday that the former second-round draft pick will indeed get to 300 strikeouts.

"Let's say Misiorowski has eight starts left. If so, he would need to average 12 strikeouts in those eight starts to get the 96 he needs to reach 300. It seems outrageous -- but also doable," Rymer wrote. "At 40.6 percent, he currently has the highest strikeout rate ever for an ERA title qualifier in a non-shortened season. And believe it or not, it's trending up. He's come out of the All-Star break with a 45.7 K% in four starts, which is closer-caliber levels of excellence that most starters never come close to."

If Misiorowski makes eight more starts, the odds would still be stacked against him collecting the necessary 96 strikeouts.

He's "only" recorded 12 or more punchouts in a game four times across 36 career starts, though three of them have come in the last dozen appearances. Misiorowski's had at least five strikeouts in every start this year and has registered double-digit punchouts 10 times in 22 starts.
